Through interdisciplinary care planning, our children benefit from care in the following fields:
We employ highly skilled licensed nurses with specialized training in such techniques as tracheostomy care, oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry monitoring, nasogastric and nasojejunal gastronomy, total parenteral nutrition, and intravenous therapy. The nurses provide counseling and training to family members, especially when a child is preparing to return home. Our nursing team consists of RNs, LPNs and CNAs. In order to help our nursing team grow and learn, we offer a transition training program consisting of classroom and preceptor training.
Our Long-Term Home Health Care Program provides individualized, comprehensive health care to families throughout New York City by bringing our services to the doorstep of children with extended care needs. The program allows children with conditions and disabilities that would normally require hospitalization or placement in a long-term care facility a chance to be treated in the comfort of a loving home without sacrificing pediatric expertise or high-quality care.
Our staff pediatricians oversee specialties of cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, and pulmonary medicine. When necessary, they arrange for follow-up care with a subspecialty service at a referral hospital.
We provide intensive rehabilitation for children with a broad range of disabilities, such as amputations and other orthopedic problems, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, blindness, speech and hearing impairments, and brain injury.
At the John A. Coleman School, Inc., on-site education is available to all children from birth to age 21. NY State approved private special education preschool and school age programs are offered, as well as early intervention group and individual programming. Bedside instruction is available for medically compromised children unable to attend a classroom.
In addition, NY City Department of Education home instruction classes for children/adolescents receiving intensive rehabilitation and individual & group sessions in counseling, music therapy & adapted physical education are offered.
Because families of children with complex medical conditions often struggle with social, economic, and emotional difficulties, our social workers help parents and other relatives meet these challenges and prepare to provide appropriate care for children when they return home. They refer parents to resources in the community that will enable them to meet their children's special needs. As needed, they also advocate for families with Medicaid, insurance providers, or Social Security.
Our Mental Health department helps residents, families, and staff deal with emotional and behavioral issues connected to children's illnesses or disabilities and their stay in a residential nursing facility. A psychologist assesses each child on admission to determine the need for individual or group therapy, special education, or referral to a psychiatrist. As needed, children receive psychotherapy at a level appropriate to their developmental stage, including play therapy and art therapy.
Our Pastoral Care department provides for the spiritual needs of residents, families and staff in a manor which is respectful of their personal beliefs and/or faith tradition. The department serves as a liaison with local faith communities, and offers grief and bereavement support. A chapel is located on-site.
Because we serve many children with life-threatening conditions, we often have the sad necessity of providing compassionate end-of-life care for dying children and support for those who mourn their passing. Our interdisciplinary Pediatric Palliative Care Program seeks to improve pain management, care planning, family involvement, and bereavement counseling for children diagnosed with terminal illness and for all those who need these services.
